I needed to replace a long-drop that wasn’t functioning well, and I wanted to replace it with an organic solution that was also affordable. I wanted a reasonably sized system that would be low-maintenance and would also future-proof the property if the use increased or if the property had to be sold in the years to come.
I went for the Nature Loo Classic 850 and installed it in on outhouse adjacent to my tiny house/art studio in Piha. I’ve been using it for about 5 months and still haven’t filled up a chamber, so the maintenance is very low! *Big tick and smiley face*

No — a properly installed Nature Loo is odourless. Continuous ventilation draws air down through the pedestal and out of the building, so the bathroom stays fresh at all times.
Nature Loo is a batch system: when the chamber in use fills up — typically after a few months, depending on how many people use it — you simply swap it with the resting chamber. The full one then quietly composts down, so by the time you empty it the contents have already broken down into compost.
Rules vary from council to council. Composting toilets are widely used for baches, rural homes and off-grid builds, but most councils treat them as part of your wastewater arrangements — so it pays to check locally. Ask us — we’re happy to advise on what your council typically requires.
